Meet Yornitj, the Masked Owl, the fine feathered friend that helped kickstart Australia's very first owl-friendly community. Picture this: a ten-year-old Boyd Wykes, blissfully unaware of the birdy adventures ahead of him, discovers an injured Tawny Frogmouth on his walk home from school. Instead of heading straight for the couch and a snack, young Boyd dives headfirst into owl care, igniting a lifelong passion for nocturnal birds that had a few quirks along the way.
Fast forward to Boyd's retirement when a fleeting glimpse of a rare Masked Owl near his home in Margaret River sends him over the moon and into full-on birdwatching mode. Teaming up with his photography partner in crime, Steve Castan, along with a dedicated crew of "Mowl" enthusiasts, Boyd goes on a quest to find mating pairs and their nests. Who knew gathering scientific info could be this much fun? So come along for a chat and a light-hearted dive into the nighttime antics of our feathery friends. It's free, and you'll even get to hang out in the lovely Albany Public Library Meeting Rooms.
