If you have ever found yourself staring at a plate of oysters and wondering how they got there, or if you just like the idea of poking around a facility full of tiny, grumpy shellfish, this might be your thing. The Albany Shellfish Hatchery is opening its doors for a few hours over a couple of days in July, letting anyone curious enough wander through and see what all the fuss is about. You get to peer at the state of the art setup that relies on Albany's famously clean water, and learn about the various species they grow. It is basically a behind the scenes look at one of the more environmentally friendly ways to produce protein, which is a fancy way of saying you can feel good about eating seafood while also satisfying your nosy side.
The whole thing is part of the City of Albany's Maritime Festival, so you can pretend you are being cultural while you stare at baby shellfish. It costs ten bucks, which is less than a seafood platter, and you have to book ahead because they presumably do not want a crowd of people breathing on the larvae. The tours run on Wednesday 15 July 2026 at 10am and again at 2pm, and then again on Saturday 18 July at 10am and 1pm. The hatchery is on Murray Road in Torndirrup, which is a short drive from Albany if you are not already living in a caravan down the road.
