On Thursday the sixteenth of July 2026, from half past ten in the morning until midday, the Albany Public Library will be showing a film called Magic Beach. It is based on Alison Lester's picture book from 1990, which means it is an Australian institution roughly the same age as many of the parents who might want to take their kids along. The movie is a mix of real people and ten different animation styles, which sounds like a recipe for chaos but is apparently very charming. It follows nine children and a dog whose day at the beach gradually turns into a series of grand imaginative adventures. You know, the kind where the sandcastle becomes a fortress and the seagull a dragon. It is suitable for anyone aged three and up, so feel free to bring the whole pack.
The event is free, but you need to register because they want to know how many little snack fiends to expect. Snacks are provided, which is either a generous offer or a cunning plot to keep the children quiet during the film. It will take place in the Meeting Rooms at the Albany Public Library, 221 York Street in Albany, Western Australia. That is within driving distance of pretty much everywhere in town, and if you are coming from further afield, well, it is a nice excuse for a coastal drive. Just do not forget to register first, or you might be left watching the seagulls on the actual beach while everyone else enjoys their free popcorn.
