When you wander around the Whaling Station, keep your eyes peeled—you might just run into a retired whaler. These old sea dogs love to reminisce about the good old days at the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company, which was basically the mainstay of Albany's maritime history. It's like a live history lesson, but with fewer textbooks and more tales of giant fish. Who knows, you might even get them to share their best whale tale, but no promises on whether those whales were really as big as they claim.
This little meet-and-greet is part of the Albany Maritime Festival 2025, so it's bound to be a sea of stories and maybe a few "back in my day" moments. Tickets are fairly priced, with adults paying $35 and kids aged 6 to 17 at $12—just don't try to sneak in a five-year-old, they get in for free. So, if you've got a spare day from July 7 to July 10, swing by the Historic Whaling Station at Torndirrup and dive into some fascinating chats over a few nostalgic chuckles.
