Shine tells the real life story of piano prodigy David Helfgott, played by Geoffrey Rush, in a series of flashbacks. Pushed into music by his domineering father Peter, David is steadied by teacher Ben Rosen on the way to a state music championship, and later supported by novelist Katharine Susannah Prichard as opportunities to study abroad surface and stall. The film builds to David's make or break performance of Rachmaninoff's notoriously demanding Piano Concerto No 3, a piece that tests technique, nerves and, frankly, anyone's sanity.
The screening is free but registration is required. It's a moving portrait of talent and pressure with moments of warmth, awkward humour and music so intense you might rethink your instrument choice.
