On Tuesday the fifth of August 2025, from half past four to half past five in the arvo, the Albany Public Library is hosting a bit of a shindig with some talented wordsmiths. You've got Melanie Mununggurr, who's not just a poet but also a Djapu mum, storyteller and performer, so she's probably got a fair few tales to spin. Then there's Dave Clark, a wordsmith who's snagged a Northern Territory Literary Award, so he definitely knows his stuff. And rounding out the trio is Laurie May, hailing from Mparntwe/Alice Springs, who apparently moonlights as a spoken word wizard and poetry teacher.
They're keen to have a yarn about how their verses connect with their communities, how politics both local and national sneak into their work, and the very ground under their feet that inspires their words. It's less about rhyming couplets and more about real life stuff. Nicole Smede from Red Room Poetry will be keeping everyone in line, or at least trying to, as she hosts the session. And because they're good sorts, it's absolutely free to wander in, no need to book a spot. Just rock up.
