Imagine Audrey Hepburn, playing a modern royal, chucking her official duties out the window to explore Rome all by her lonesome. Naturally, she bumps into a charming American journalist, played by Gregory Peck, who's got dollar signs (or rather, headline signs) in his eyes. He pretends not to recognise her, hoping for a juicy scoop, but as these things often go in classic cinema, his master plan hits a snag when pesky things like true feelings get in the way.

It's the film that snagged Audrey Hepburn an armful of gongs, including an Academy Award, a BAFTA, and a Golden Globe for her stellar performance, and it even got a nod at the Venice Film Festival.
